Compassion is the empathetic understanding and concern for the suffering of others, coupled with a desire to alleviate their pain. When directed inward, self-compassion becomes a cultivated practice, much like learning a new skill. It may initially feel challenging to acknowledge and embrace the harsh inner critic, but with consistent effort, we can develop the capacity to treat ourselves with the same kindness and care we extend to a young child, a close friend, or a beloved pet. This practice emphasizes ongoing effort and improvement, recognizing that perfection is not the goal, but rather the consistent demonstration of compassion towards oneself and others.
